Your #Android phone has a so-called Google advertising ID*, a unique number for your device. Using that, #tracking companies follow and record what you do on your phone, even across apps from different companies.
Luckily, you can now disable the advertising ID to make it harder for them to track you. We recommend doing this to everyone. Here's how it works.
*Unless of course, you’re using a google-free #LineageOS, #GrapheneOS or similar. :)

Arrived in Paris for #ica22! Our Airbnb has a really interesting piece of local ICT history on display: A Minitel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minitel)! I have never seen one "in the wild" before.

A new study finds 3,000 websites on which third-party tracking companies scoop up what you type into forms in real time — even if you never hit submit. This happens on about 1,800 websites for E.U. users too, likely in violation of the GDPR.

Tracking science and its users has been a worrying development over recent years, especially by academic publishers such as #Elsevier. It's also something the academy isn't talking enough about IMHO. Such tracking & surveillance is an affront to academic freedom.
Taking up this thread are Eiko Fried & Robin Kok who placed a subject access request with Elsevier. This blog post describes what they found -- and it confirms the surveillance we all fear https://eiko-fried.com/welcome-to-hotel-elsevier-you-can-check-out-any-time-you-like-not/
Mal schauen, ob da noch was kommt 🙂
#introduction Hi fediscience.org! Thank you very much for hosting my account. I am a geologist postdoctoral researcher working on geochemistry/mineralogy/crystallography
