Looking for people that organized scientific conferences (including something resembling poster sessions) online. What tool(s) did you use? How was your setup? What went well and what would you do differently next time? Boosts greatly appreciated.

Hello fellow Europeans in the #Fediverse:

Do you know about any organisations promoting #FreeSoftware, #OpenSource, #OER to educational instiutions/public administrations?

Are you aware of any educational institutions already using FS?

Do you know about any other #education related activities in your country?

Asking for a friend @egnun

Please boost!

Do you know ? A group of scientists fighting fake news on climate change and health. They review viral "news" stories: make detailed comments with web annotations, a summary and a quantitative assessment.

Well it's July and it's normal for melting to happen but no, the long term trend isn't particularly good..

We have GRACE satellite measurements since 2002, see:

Some tips for the newbies.

If you click on someone's name you go to their profile. But here you often only see a few toots (as tweets are called around here). If you click on the icon, you go to their local instance where you can see more toots.

If you want to follow someone while you are at their instance, you need to login, which can be cumbersome if you do this by hand. You can also copy the URL of the profile & paste it in our search bar. Then it will appear below & is easy to follow.

@roelof
Is this at Oostvardersplassen nature reserve? ( I don't know exactly where it is in NL but I just read a fascinating book about that talked about it)

Programming, every single time.

4 hours into the project:
"Awesome, this is straight-forward and we're almost done already!"

4 weeks into the project:
"WTF, how can this be so complicated?"

@jvelut Thanks! I Just downloaded it - let's see how it works, I still find mastodon a little confusing @fedilab@toot.fedilab.app

So this is interesting, medics in Denmark & Ireland independently found a significant drop in very premature babies during lockdown - 90% fewer in DK! Which is pretty remarkable..

They speculate it could be less air pollution, fewer infections or stress on expectant mothers but no-one really knows. I have been interested in reduction in aircraft contrails & weather but there are loads of other effects I think could be interesting to look at

Good morning everyone! As I'm on holiday and using this on my phone, I was wondering if there was a good app for mobile devices for mastodon that anyone can recommend?

@dantheclamman that is so cool to hear, I remember the original biosphere 2 experiment was on the children's BBC news back when I was a kid - I always wondered what happened to it! Does it still have all the plants and stuff in it? And can you even visit it? @hushroom @dantheclamman@scicomm.xyz @bhaugen

Please use Content Warnings for sensitive topics (in other cultures), such as abuse or violence (for Europeans) and sex (for Americans). When joking punch up, not down.

Mastodon has many features to make it easier for everyone to participate. When adding media/pictures please add a description. If you write your hashtag in , screen readers will read them out correctly. If a picture contains much text, you can OCR it by adding (in the reply):
@OCRbot (easy when you follow OCR bot).

Thanks for the welcome @VictorVenema ! Introduction then?
So I'm a climate scientist at the Danish Meteorological Institute with a special interest in the Arctic and Greenland and the interactions between ice sheet and atmosphere

Hello world!
Let's see how this mastodon thing works then, shall we take a look at how the ice sheet
is doing right now?
