Question for the .

I would like to translate an old meteorological book as a test case together with @xldrkp to see how the tools, starting with , perform.
github.com/singlesourcepub/com

A terrible case 🤡: a German book with long citations in French and Italian, many, many footnotes, figures, tables. If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere.

The publisher kindly send me a scan of the book. So I need good Software. What is your favorite OCR Tool?

Du hast ein FOSS Projekt / App, wo ich mit übersetzen kann. dann erwähne einfach meinen account

🎉 Happy New Year!! 🍾

As follow up on the story that China wants to write more scientific articles in Chinese: does anyone here know someone in China (at the Chinese Academy of Sciences?) who we could write to to lobby for translating these articles?

I came across a documentary showing clay tablets used for writing long long ago. Now that we have Translate Science this made me wonder how they have been translated.

Does anyone here know how that is done?

If they have software/tools to find and make such translations would that be something we could adopt/adapt for translated scientific articles?

"#Masakhane is a grassroots organisation whose mission is to strengthen and spur #NLP [natural language processing] research in African languages, for Africans, by Africans. Despite the fact that 2000 of the world’s languages are African, African languages are barely represented in technology. The tragic past of colonialism has been devastating for African languages in terms of their support, preservation and integration. This has resulted in technological space that does not understand our names, our cultures, our places, our history.

Masakhane roughly translates to “We build together” in isiZulu. Our goal is for Africans to shape and own these technological advances towards human dignity, well-being and equity, through inclusive community building, open participatory research and multidisciplinarity."

China shifts from reliance on international publications universityworldnews.com/post.p

News story from the first months of the pandemic. China wants to produce more articles in Chinese.

Word has it that the leadership was not amused that the main article about the SARS2 virus was published in English and not in Chinese.

Rather than writing more Chinese articles I wish they had simply set aside money for translations. So that everyone can read the articles and Chinese authors can write in Chinese.
