I think most people can accept any individual trans person, it's missing the point to lecture them about it. Cis people are freaking out at the collective phenomenon, which to them seemingly came out of nowhere, is huge, and growing. And we sort of have to meet people where they are and address that. Tell them how it's not new, exchange theories on the (real or apparent) sudden rise. #trans #lgbt
Thought I saw a new-to-me mushroom in the yard, but at closer inspection they turned out to be ghost plants! Monotropa uniflora, freaky little chlorophyll-free parasitic plants. 🆒
Banality of evil is a phrase from Hannah Arendt which she used to describe how ordinary people could become Nazis or quiet sympathizers to Nazi violence. It's the result of people just following orders and doing the everyday things that are required and expected.
It's really hard to not despair. It's hard to not give up. It's hard to not just lie down. But it's important not to. It's how we make it through together. It's how we love and care for each other.
A script that corrects the word "maker" into "guy who does arts and crafts"
"Maker space" = craft room
"Maker ethos" = enthusiasm for arts and crafts
"Maker fair" = craft expo
None of this shit is revolutionary, it's just stuff that your grandmas have always done. You are the newcomer. It's not any less arts-and-crafts just because it involves a 3D printer now.
#PaperOfTheDay - this ignobel-prize-winning one: harmonics of vibrated earthworm
This year's IgNobel Prize has this very apt prize for #COVID19 . It's awarded to the leaders of the US, UK, India, etc. "for using the COVID-19 viral pandemic to teach the world that politicians can have a more immediate effect on life and death than scientists and doctors can."
a more nuanced take: as a blunt instrument of the spread of neoliberalism google can only understand buildings as places of commerce and the people who frequent to the buildings as consumers. the neoliberal consumer exercises agency primarily through commercial decisions and communicating such decisions to other consumers. "voting with your dollars" takes the place of political action and "leaving reviews" takes the place of accountability and political organization.
Dune: not that impressed. heading towards 2 or 3/5. #books
might have loved it at 14, but there's so many more interesting less conventional fantasy novels out there at that level too.
still I'm trying to mentally cannibalize this and extract useful parts for "my next novel". I think the politics of the universe is brought to the reader at just the right level of explicit vs implicit.

Science magazine recent book reviews: "A reading list for uncertain times"
uspol, "like an experimental concentration camp"
> Several legal advocacy groups on Monday filed a whistleblower complaint on behalf of a nurse at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center documenting “jarring medical neglect” within the facility, including a refusal to test detainees for the novel coronavirus and an exorbitant rate of hysterectomies being performed on immigrant women.
Something to think about: Did Germany really handle the pandemic well? Did New Zealand, or any other country in the Global North?
Compared to Thailand, Mongolia, Ghana, and many other countries of the Global South, were able to respond to COVID-19 in such a way that both infections and deaths remain extremely low.
Yet white western media fails to highlight this. If they do, they often ask the wrong, racist questions.
